Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Sustainable Construction Materials at University of Beira Interior (C-MADE)
The University of Beira Interior (UBI) is offering a postdoctoral research fellowship within the C-MADE – Centre of Materials and Civil Engineering for Sustainability. This opportunity is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and is aimed at PhD holders with expertise in civil engineering, materials engineering, or closely related fields. The research will focus on the development of sustainable construction materials with a low carbon footprint, emphasising the valorisation of industrial residues and the advancement of technologies for CO2 capture and mineralisation in construction materials.
The successful candidate will contribute to innovative construction solutions aligned with circular economy principles, decarbonisation of the construction sector, and sustainable material design. The work plan includes literature review, state-of-the-art analysis of accelerated carbonation formulations, selection of raw materials and additives, study of carbonation reaction conditions, experimental development and optimisation of formulations, physical and mechanical characterisation, prototype production and testing, and preparation of scientific papers and technical reports.
The fellowship is supervised by Professor João Paulo de Castro Gomes, with additional committee members Professor Dr Clemente Martins Pinto, Professor Dr Marisa Sofia Dinis de Almeida, and Professor Dr Isabel Gonçalves Falorca. The position is based at the laboratories of C-MADE, Faculty of Engineering, UBI, Covilhã, Portugal.
The fellowship duration is 12 months, starting in June 2026, and may be renewed for up to 36 months, subject to programme contract extension. The monthly maintenance allowance is €1,851.00, with personal accident insurance and optional voluntary social insurance. Applicants must have a PhD degree granted within three years prior to application, relevant research experience, proficiency in English, and must not have exceeded three years in this type of fellowship. Foreign degree holders must comply with Portuguese degree recognition procedures.
Applications are evaluated based on motivation letter (10%), curricular assessment (40%), and interview (50%). A minimum final classification of 14/20 is required.
