LUT University

Doctoral Researcher in Social Sciences (Youth, AI, and Decision-Making)

LUT University invites applications for a doctoral researcher position in social sciences, focusing on youth, artificial intelligence, and decision-making. The role is based in the Department of Social Sciences and aims to advance research on digitalisation and its societal implications, particularly through the study of youth reasoning, cognitive biases, and epistemic resilience in AI-mediated societies. The research will explore how digitalisation and artificial intelligence shape human cognition, learning, and social decision-making, with a special emphasis on youth and educational contexts. Key themes include human–machine interaction, cognitive biases, digital transformation, and AI-mediated environments. The project seeks to deepen understanding of how knowledge is formed and decisions are made in technology-rich societies, contributing to social sustainability and the digital society. At LUT, social and communication sciences research is grounded in the intersection of people and technology, addressing global sustainability challenges. The position offers a supportive academic environment, encouraging collaboration within a research group and participation in national and international projects. Responsibilities include analysing and documenting research results, publishing peer-reviewed articles, presenting at conferences, and supporting dissemination activities such as policy briefs and media presence. The doctoral researcher will complete an article-based dissertation in English within four years, participate in teaching and administrative tasks, and may undertake a three-month research visit to the University of Zurich (IKMZ) to foster international collaboration. Hybrid work arrangements are possible, but regular on-site presence in Lappeenranta is required. Flexible hours support work–life balance, and the position follows the Finnish university pay system, with a starting salary of approximately EUR 3,100 per month. Applicants must hold a master’s degree in a relevant field (sociology, psychology, education, media studies, human–AI interaction, or related social sciences). Candidates from computer science or data science backgrounds are welcome if motivated for social science research. Essential requirements include fluency in English, strong academic writing and organisational skills, familiarity with research project development, good computer skills, and commitment to ethical research practices. Additional merits include practical skills in social media and webpage design, international academic experience, and prior publications or teaching qualifications. To apply, submit the online application form with a motivation letter, CV, degree certificate (with certified translation if needed), research statement, and optional prior publications or teaching portfolio. The application deadline is July 31, 2026. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Maud Reveilhac at [email protected].
