Postdoctoral Researcher in Magnetic Nanostructures for Biomedical Applications

The Magnetic & Functional Thin Films Group at Empa specializes in designing and fabricating magnetic and functional thin films with tailored properties arising from nanoscale effects. This postdoctoral project aims to establish magnetic disk particles (MDPs) at the physical limit of performance for magnetic hyperthermia (MHT), magnetic particle imaging (MPI), and sensing applications. The successful candidate will play a central role in designing and realizing optimized magnetic multilayer systems, bridging fundamental magnetism, advanced nanofabrication, and translational biomedical research. Key responsibilities include designing optimized magnetic multilayer thin films guided by micromagnetic modeling, fabrication via sputter deposition, nanopatterning of disk-shaped particles, suspension fabrication, and magnetic characterization using VSM, MOKE, and MFM. The role involves close collaboration with international experts: Prof. Dieter Suess (University of Vienna) for micromagnetic modeling, Prof. Dr. Matthias Graeser (University of Rostock) for MPI and MPS measurements, Prof. Inge K. Herrmann (Empa / ETH Zurich / University of Zurich / Balgrist University Hospital) for particle functionalization and biomedical validation, and Prof. Michał Krupiński (Kraków, Poland) for nanopatterning using polystyrene-based lithography. Applicants must hold a PhD in physics, materials science, or a related field, with expertise in thin film magnetism and a strong publication record. A keen interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of physics, engineering, and biomedical applications is essential. Experience in micro- and nanofabrication and micromagnetic modeling is highly desirable.
