PhD Studentship in Discourse Analysis and Online Disinformation at Leeds Beckett University

Leeds Beckett University is recruiting for a PhD studentship in Psychology focused on discourse analysis and online disinformation . The project is jointly supervised by Dr Mirko A. Demasi (Senior Lecturer in Critical Psychology, Leeds Beckett University) and Dr Christopher Till . The research examines how foreign disinformation is crafted online to persuade specific audiences for manipulative ends. Using discursive psychology , the project will analyse the discursive-rhetorical means of propaganda on social media platforms, with attention to state-linked actors such as Russia, China, and Iran. The work aims to complement existing quantitative research, improve understanding of how manipulative messaging becomes normalised, and support collaborations with counter-disinformation organisations. This is a fee-funded PhD opportunity. The university will cover the PhD fees for three years, but students will need to fund their own living costs. The studentship is for home (UK) fees only and there are 5 opportunities available for an October 2026 start. Eligibility is limited to UK applicants only . Applicants should have either a 2:1 undergraduate honours degree in a related subject or a postgraduate qualification below PhD level in a relevant discipline. A clear, practical research proposal and evidence of appropriate research methods knowledge are required. Applicants are encouraged to consult relevant staff members before applying. The application deadline is 13 May 2026 . Apply via the university applicant portal and include the required documents: research proposal, statement of purpose, degree certificates and transcripts, English language qualification, CV, and an academic reference. Be sure to state the reference 2026-May-SHSS/PSYCH-PHD .
