PhD Position: Acoustic Digital Twin and Sonic Architecture of the Long Room, Trinity College Dublin

Trinity College Dublin, Ireland’s leading university and ranked 75th in the world (QS World University Rankings 2026), offers a unique PhD opportunity focused on the renovation and research of the Long Room in the Old Library. This project aims to pioneer new approaches to the preservation and enhancement of one of Europe’s premier cultural heritage landmarks by exploring its acoustic experiences and sonic architecture. The research will employ state-of-the-art robot-aided acoustic measurements and advanced computational and acoustic modelling techniques to develop a versatile Acoustic Digital Twin. This digital twin will be integrated with existing 3D image data, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the Long Room’s sonic environment and spatial characteristics. The project is designed to address aspects of the Long Room that have been largely overlooked, providing new insights into its acoustic history and future preservation strategies. Supervised by Assistant Professor Nicole Basaraba in Digital Humanities, the position is embedded within Trinity’s values-driven environment, emphasizing belonging, collaboration, accountability, imagination, and sustainability. The university is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities, non-traditional career paths, family or caring responsibilities, and international applicants displaced by war. Trinity is recognized as an EU Sustainable Gender Equality Champion and holds an Athena Swan Silver award for its ongoing work in advancing gender equality. Applicants are encouraged to submit a completed application package by 26 June 2026, 12:00 (GMT) via the official application portal. While no specific degree or skill requirements are detailed, candidates should demonstrate interest in acoustic modelling, digital humanities, and cultural heritage preservation. The university supports work-life balance and offers a family-friendly working environment. This PhD position provides an exceptional opportunity to contribute to innovative research at the intersection of architecture, computer science, and cultural heritage, within a world-class academic institution.
