Research Support Technician in Alternative Protein Processing and Food Science
University of Leeds is recruiting a
Research Support Technician
for an interdisciplinary project on
alternative proteins
,
fermentation
,
microbial protein
, and
food science
. The role sits within a $2M Bezos Earth Fund project focused on developing an open-access AI platform for microbial protein production from agri-food waste-streams, with global partners including CSIRO.
The technician will work on campus five days per week and support hands-on laboratory research across biological, chemical, and physical analyses of fermentation and alternative protein samples. Duties include sample collection and preparation, wet chemical and instrumental analysis, maintaining processing equipment, producing SOPs and risk assessments, and supporting student, academic, and industry research projects.
Applicants should have a BSc, BTEC Higher, or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Food Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related area, plus experience in a laboratory environment. Experience with fermenters, dryers, or food samples such as meat analogues and protein dispersions is desirable. Strong organisation, communication, and teamwork skills are also important.
This is a
fixed-term 18-month paid position
starting from July 2026, with salary at Grade 5 (£29,588–£33,002 p.a. depending on experience). The post is based at the University of Leeds and is not suitable for first-time Skilled Worker visa applicants.
