Doctoral researcher in synchronous generation in renewable-dominated power systems
LUT University invites applications for a doctoral researcher position in synchronous generation in renewable-dominated power systems, funded by Wärtsilä. The project addresses the challenges posed by increasing renewable energy penetration, such as voltage instability and reduced system reliability, and aims to develop advanced modeling and simulation frameworks that integrate both conventional and inverter-based resources.
Key research objectives include defining system strength and stability metrics, evaluating system behavior under varying operating conditions and uncertainties, and investigating optimal sizing and placement of inverter-based resources to enhance dynamic stability while considering techno-economic trade-offs. The research will be conducted at the LUT Laboratory of Control Engineering and Digital Systems and the Laboratory of Electricity Markets and Power Systems, providing access to a collaborative and innovative academic setting at the intersection of control, power systems, and electricity markets.
The position is funded by Wärtsilä, a leading Finnish technology company specializing in sustainable marine and energy solutions, ensuring strong industry collaboration and practical relevance. The supervisory team includes Associate Professor Niko Nevaranta and Professor Jukka Lassila, along with an industry expert, offering comprehensive academic and professional guidance throughout the doctoral studies.
As a doctoral researcher, you will focus on completing your doctoral degree within four years, which involves producing a dissertation based on four peer-reviewed publications and a summary thesis, as well as completing 30 ECTS credits of complementary doctoral studies. You will also participate in teaching activities for bachelor’s and master’s students and engage in academic duties such as attending seminars, presenting research, and contributing to publications.
Applicants must hold a higher university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in electrical engineering, control engineering, or a closely related discipline, with a strong background in power systems. Experience in modeling, simulation, and control design is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate motivation, independence, and effective communication skills, and must be proficient in English. The selected candidate is required to apply for the right to complete doctoral studies at the LUT Doctoral School within the first two months of appointment.
The position is based at the Lappeenranta campus, with regular on-site presence expected. Employment begins in March–April 2026, starting with a one-year contract and potential extension up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress. The starting salary is approximately EUR 2,780 per month, determined by the Finnish university salary system, and includes access to a research incentive scheme for high-quality publications.
