PhD Position in CO₂ Capture Materials – Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry at ETH Zurich

The Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (LESE) at ETH Zurich, led by Senior Scientist and Lecturer Paula Abdala, is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join their research on structure–activity relationships in CO₂ capture materials. This project is part of the NCCR Separations program and aims to accelerate the discovery of next-generation CO₂ sorbents with significant climate impact. The research combines material synthesis, advanced operando characterization techniques (including X-ray absorption, total scattering, and vibrational spectroscopy), and molecular modelling. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry, and a keen interest in fundamental research with real-world applications in climate change mitigation. This is a 100% funded PhD position based in Zurich, Switzerland, with employment conditions following ETH Zurich and Swiss federal guidelines. The start date is from May 2026. The position offers the opportunity to work in a leading research environment and contribute to impactful scientific advancements in CO₂ capture technologies. Applicants are required to apply exclusively through the official ETH Zurich application portal. Applications via LinkedIn or direct messages will not be considered. It is recommended to prepare a tailored motivation letter and submit your application as early as possible, as the position may close once a suitable candidate is found. For more information about the application process, refer to the ETH Zurich FAQ page. The group encourages candidates with relevant backgrounds and a passion for climate-related research to apply and join their dynamic team.
