PhD in Bioinformatics and Antimicrobial Resistance at Jagiellonian University

PhD opportunity in the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, focused on systematic analysis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles and resistance spread in hospitals and their environments. The project sits at the intersection of bioinformatics, biology, computer science, statistics, medical science, environmental science , and microbial genomics. The research aims to build scalable analytical workflows for tracking pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) using NGS , metagenomics , functional annotation of virulence factors, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and reconstruction of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). Candidates will work with large datasets from previous MCB UJ projects and the International MetaSUB Consortium, integrating environmental resistomes with clinical isolates, antibiotic consumption indicators, and epidemiological trends to model how resistance spreads in hospital settings. The post is announced by Paweł P. Łabaj , Bioinformatics PI & Deputy Director at MCB UJ, who is recruiting for a PhD topic within his lab. The broader doctoral school page confirms that the programme is run in English and offers a full scholarship funded by the Polish government regardless of nationality . Eligibility highlights include strong motivation for interdisciplinary research, interest in computational and biological sciences, and readiness to work on a specific supervisor-defined topic. The deadline given in the post is June 8th, 2026 . There is also a note that additional calls for Staff Scientist and PostDoc positions will open soon.
