PhD Position in Medical Science: Lasting Weight Loss and Well-being in the Elderly – University of Gothenburg
The University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy is offering a doctoral (PhD) position in medical science, focusing on the project "Can lasting weight loss from middle age improve well-being in the elderly?" The research will be conducted at the Department of Health and Care Sciences, within a dynamic environment collaborating with experienced researchers. The project investigates whether significant, long-term weight loss initiated in middle age can enhance daily functioning and well-being among elderly individuals with obesity, using data from the renowned Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) study. This large-scale, longitudinal clinical intervention study includes over 4,000 participants and more than 20 years of follow-up, providing a unique opportunity to analyze the effects of weight loss on quality of life, independence, mobility, physical activity, and dementia risk in older adults.
The doctoral student will work closely with supervisors Per-Arne Svensson (professor) and My Engström, and will be part of a supportive research community at the Sahlgrenska Academy. The position requires strong research skills, particularly in handling and analyzing large datasets, and proficiency in statistical analysis using R. Experience in research related to obesity, aging, or health is highly valued. Excellent command of both Swedish and English is essential, as the research context and data require Swedish, while publications and collaborations are in English. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required for the duration of the studies.
Applicants must hold an advanced degree or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at the advanced level), or possess equivalent qualifications. Specific eligibility in medical science and English B/6 proficiency is required. The doctoral position is a full-time employment for four years, with the possibility of up to 20% institutional duties (such as teaching or administration) that extend the employment period. Salary is set according to local agreements. The application deadline is February 23, 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the University of Gothenburg's recruitment portal.
