PostDoc in Multi-modal Sensor Fusion and Electron Microscopy at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

The ECLIPSE Lab at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is recruiting a PostDoc in Multi-modal Sensor Fusion in Electron Microscopy (m/f/x) for the second phase of the ERC-funded HyperScaleEM project. The position starts on October 15, 2026 and is focused on scaling up hyperspectral atomic-resolution imaging from proof-of-principle toward scalable, automated, experimentally validated workflows for 3D chemistry at the atomic scale. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of computational imaging , electron scattering physics , spectroscopy , and microscope automation . The role connects large-scale simulation, inverse algorithms, compressive multi-modal XD-STEM acquisition strategies, and deployment on aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopes. Research tasks include developing scalable methods for hyperspectral atomic-resolution imaging, advancing simulation and inversion pipelines for atom-by-atom chemical identification, designing automated experimental workflows that couple spectroscopy, diffraction, and tomography, and helping establish robust acquisition strategies for the project’s milestones. Required background includes a PhD in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, computer science, computational engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field. Strong experience in computational microscopy, computational imaging, inverse problems, electron microscopy, or spectroscopy is expected, along with excellent scientific programming skills, preferably in Python. Experience with PyTorch, JAX, large-scale optimization, Bayesian inference, physics-based reconstruction, aberration-corrected STEM instrumentation, detector integration, microscope automation, HPC, or GPU programming is preferred. Very good English communication skills are required. The position is based at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and offers access to state-of-the-art aberration-corrected electron microscopes and high-performance computing resources. The postdoc will contribute directly to the chemical imaging scale-up phase of HyperScaleEM and help lay the foundations for later in-situ studies on complex materials. The role is described as a central scientific position in an ambitious long-term project with strong interdisciplinary collaboration.
