PostDoc Position in Artificial Intelligence for Automated Medical Reporting (100%)

The Center for medical Image Analysis and Navigation (CIAN) group at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel, is offering a fully funded PostDoc position focused on Artificial Intelligence for Automated Medical Reporting. Led by Prof. Dr. Philippe C. Cattin, this interdisciplinary team works at the intersection of artificial intelligence, natural language processing (NLP), and medical informatics. The research aims to develop agentic AI systems that automate the generation of structured medical reports, impacting clinical workflows and research documentation. Key responsibilities include designing AI-driven pipelines to generate pre-structured medical reports from minimal input data, such as raw measurements, annotations, or unstructured notes. You will implement integration code to ensure robust and reproducible AI solutions, maintain module tests for performance and safety, and focus on clinical relevance. Research questions address the minimal input required for high-quality domain-specific reports, autonomous literature curation for dynamic report generation, and ensuring traceability and explainability in AI-generated documentation. Collaboration with clinicians and domain experts is integral to aligning technical solutions with real-world needs. The position offers opportunities to publish in top-tier conferences and journals, present at international workshops, and access high-performance computing resources. The University of Basel provides a dynamic, international environment, flexible working conditions, and a supportive team culture. Mentorship from Prof. Cattin and collaborations with clinical partners, such as University Hospital Basel, are included. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience. Required skills include strong Python programming, experience with NLP/LLM frameworks (e.g., Hugging Face, LangChain), software engineering practices, and handling medical data pipelines. Excellent English communication skills are essential; German is a plus but not mandatory. Candidates should be enthusiastic team players with a research mindset and ability to tackle open-ended questions in AI for healthcare. The position is fully funded for two years, with a competitive salary according to Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) guidelines. The application deadline is April 30, 2026. To apply, submit a motivation letter, CV (including publications), transcripts (Bachelor's and Master's), and contact details for two references via the online application portal. The University of Basel is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from underrepresented groups. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Philippe C. Cattin at [email protected] or visit the CIAN group page at https://dbe.unibas.ch/en/cian.
