Full-time Research and Teaching Assistant Position in Architectural Engineering – Brussels School of Engineering

The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) invites applications for a full-time research and teaching assistant position in architectural engineering at the Brussels School of Engineering, within the BATir (Building, Architecture, and Town Planning) department. This opportunity is based in Brussels, Belgium, offering a multicultural and dynamic academic environment in the heart of Europe. The BATir department is renowned for its commitment to both applied and fundamental research in the built environment, encompassing architectural engineering, urbanism, civil engineering, and sustainability. The successful candidate will actively participate in educational activities, including design studios, tutorials, exercises for theoretical courses, master’s thesis supervision, and pedagogical coordination. The teaching responsibilities primarily cover the Bachelor and Master’s programmes in Architectural Engineering, with partial involvement in advanced Masters in Urbanism and Urban Studies. Courses include Sustainable Urban Design Studio, Sustainable Architectural Design Studio, and Bioclimatic Design, all delivered in English. The teaching workload may be revised based on the candidate’s skills and departmental needs. Research duties are integral to the position, with the expectation that the candidate will pursue a PhD in Architecture and Urbanism. The research project should align with the broader fields of architectural engineering or urban planning, ideally connecting with the Sustainable Urban Futures Institute (SUFI) research unit and focusing on sustainability or sustainable design. The precise PhD topic will be developed collaboratively with the supervisor, Prof. Pierre Gerard. The position is initially offered for two years, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional two-year terms, subject to review and approval. Applicants must hold a Masters degree (120 ECTS) in architectural engineering or architecture (or equivalent) and meet the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme. Young graduates are encouraged to apply, provided they have relevant professional experience in architectural practice, design, or engineering. Prior teaching and research experience, as well as demonstrated professional practice in architectural engineering or urbanism, are considered assets. Required skills include autonomy, reliability, strong organisational abilities, high motivation for research and teaching, fluency in English (C1 level), and recommended knowledge of French (B2 level). Innovative and creative thinking are essential, and experience with digital tools for sustainability or energy analysis is advantageous. The department values diversity and equal opportunities, and reasonable accommodations are available for candidates with disabilities. To apply, candidates must submit a CV, an application letter, a four-page note on their proposed PhD research project, and two letters of reference, all structured using the provided template. Applications not using the template or incomplete submissions will not be considered. The application deadline is 26 May 2026. For more information, contact Prof. Pierre Gerard at [email protected]. Candidates from restricted countries should email their application to [email protected]. Additional details about the BATir department, SUFI research unit, and ULB’s diversity policy are available via the provided links. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to high-level research and teaching in architectural engineering and urbanism, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation in the built environment.
