Postdoc/Scientist Climate Change in Extreme Rainfall and Flood Prediction under Climate Change

KNMI (Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut) is advertising a 4-year scientist climate change / postdoc-style research position in De Bilt, the Netherlands, focused on extreme rainfall, hydroclimatic extremes, flood prediction, climate change, weather and climate models , and the physical processes that drive severe precipitation in a warming climate. The role sits within the Extreme-Futures project , part of a Royal Society Faraday Discovery Fellowship led by Professor Fowler of Newcastle University . The project aims to improve forecasts of flash floods and prolonged storms and to strengthen climate resilience and adaptation. At KNMI, the successful candidate will work with the Future Weather system , using pseudo global warming approaches to simulate extreme events across past, present, and future climate conditions. Research tasks include designing and running experiments, extending modelling applications to higher-resolution simulations, tailoring model setups to better understand physical processes, analysing large-scale and high-resolution model output, writing and publishing scientific articles, and collaborating with international researchers across the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands. Eligibility highlights: a completed PhD in meteorology, environmental sciences, computer science, or a related field; experience with climate or weather models, preferably high-resolution regional models; knowledge of atmospheric mesoscale dynamics, convection, and rainfall processes (or strong motivation to develop this expertise); Fortran, Linux, and Python skills; experience analysing large datasets; excellent English; and preferably some understanding of Dutch. Funding and conditions: this is a salaried research job at salary scale 11 (€4,024–€6,110 gross per month, based on a 36-hour week), with a fixed-term contract for 48 months and 32–36 hours per week. Benefits include public transport reimbursement or mileage allowance, laptop and mobile phone, a home workspace budget, pension through ABP, hybrid working, training and career coaching, and visa/language support (no accommodation). Deadline: 29 April 2026. Interviews are planned for 12–13 May at KNMI in De Bilt. Applicants may also face a pre-selection test, case assignment, screening, and reference checks.
