PhD Positions in Geospatial AI, Remote Sensing, and Human Settlement Mapping
Three new PhD positions are available for joint doctoral projects between the OBELIX group at the University of South Brittany in Vannes, France, and the European Commission Joint Research Center (JRC) in Ispra, Italy. These positions focus on cutting-edge research in geospatial artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and the mapping and characterization of human settlements using Earth Observation (EO) data.
The available projects are:
Global multi-task learning for mapping and characterizing human settlements from EO data:
This project aims to develop advanced machine learning models for analyzing EO data to map and understand human settlements globally.
Backcasting anthropogenic infrastructures over a century of historical EO data and maps:
This research will reconstruct and analyze the development of human-made infrastructures using historical EO datasets and mapping techniques.
Explainable multimodal AI using geospatial data for rapid estimation of displacement and people in need in crises:
The focus here is on creating explainable AI systems that integrate multiple data sources to quickly estimate population displacement and humanitarian needs during crises.
These joint doctoral positions offer the opportunity to work with leading researchers at both the University of South Brittany and the European Commission JRC, providing a unique international research environment. The projects are ideal for candidates interested in geospatial AI, remote sensing, machine learning, and the societal impacts of technological advances in mapping and crisis response.
Eligibility:
Applicants should have a relevant master's degree (e.g., computer science, geography, environmental science), strong programming skills, and proficiency in English. Experience with machine learning, remote sensing, or geospatial data analysis is highly desirable. Additional expertise in explainable AI, historical data analysis, or crisis mapping is a plus.
Funding:
While the post does not specify funding details, joint doctoral projects with the European Commission JRC typically include financial support. Candidates are encouraged to consult the provided project links for specific information on stipends, tuition coverage, and other benefits.
