Postdoc in Mathematical Biology, Biophysics, and Theory-led Developmental Biology

ERC-funded postdoctoral opportunity at the University of Aberdeen in mathematical biology , biophysics , and theory-led developmental biology . The role is advertised as Research Fellow in Theoretical and Mathematical Biology (IMS325R) within the Institute of Medical Sciences, Medicine, Medical Sciences & Nutrition. The project, led by Dr Tom Hiscock , focuses on understanding how intercellular signalling in developing embryos enables self-organization into complex structures. The research uses sophisticated mathematical models informed by biological knowledge and experimental data, with particular interest in novel reaction-diffusion mechanisms beyond classic Turing-pattern paradigms. This is a highly interdisciplinary post for candidates with experience in mathematical modelling , dynamical systems theory , numerical methods , coding , or machine learning . Applicants with a PhD or postdoctoral experience in computational/mathematical biology are ideal, but strong candidates from physical or mathematical sciences without prior biology background are also encouraged if they are enthusiastic about learning developmental biology. PhD students near completion may also be considered. The position is full time and funded by the European Research Council. Salary is on Grade 6, £38,784-£46,049 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. The post may be eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship or a Global Talent Visa route, subject to UKVI rules and candidate circumstances. Application is via the University of Aberdeen online jobs portal. Applicants should upload a covering letter and CV, and provide referee details including email address and phone number. The closing date is 26 June 2026 .
