PhD and Postdoc Opportunities in Geology Numerical Modelling and Sedimentary Basin Mineral Systems

Two research opportunities in geology numerical modelling and sedimentary basin mineral systems are advertised at Géosciences Environnement Toulouse (GET), CNRS , with collaborations involving the University of Bergen, BRGM, Géosciences Rennes, and other partners. PhD in Geology Numerical Modelling : this 36-month doctoral project focuses on lithosphere-scale processes, thermo-mechanical modelling, surface process modelling, and the evolution of the Aquitaine Basin in relation to heat, fluids, gases, sediment routing, stratigraphic architecture, and thermal evolution. The project is part of the PEPR sous-sol, bien commun / IDYLLE initiative, addressing subsurface resources such as natural hydrogen, geothermal energy, and minerals. The PhD candidate will work in Toulouse and collaborate with researchers in France and Norway. Postdoc in Geology Numerical Modelling : this 18-month position examines how the initial structure and thermal state of continental lithosphere influence foreland basin evolution, again centered on the Aquitaine Basin and retro-foreland of the Pyrenean Orogen. The work uses coupled thermo-mechanical and surface process modelling to study sediment routing, stratigraphic architecture, and thermal evolution. The postdoc includes extended professional travel in Norway and is also part of the IDYLLE project. PhD in geology: Mineral system at the sedimentary basin scale : this 36-month doctoral project is based in the PEPR ORGMET framework and investigates Pb-Zn(-Ge) mineral systems in the central Pyrenees. It combines structural geology, stratigraphy, basin analysis, thermochronology, mineralogical and geochemical characterization, balanced cross-sections, Raman spectroscopy, vitrinite reflectance, LA-ICP-MS U-Pb carbonate dating, and thermal modelling to reconstruct the evolution of organic-rich sedimentary basins and mineralization pathways. Eligibility highlights : the PhD call asks for a master’s degree or equivalent, a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, diplomas, references, English proficiency if required, and a master’s thesis. The postdoc requires a PhD or equivalent with experience in general geology, structural geology, sedimentary basin geology, and numerical modelling. Both offers are full-time CNRS contracts. Deadline : the CNRS pages list application deadlines of 15 June 2026 for the mineral-system PhD and 16 June 2026 for the numerical-modelling PhD and postdoc.
