Robotics Postdoc, PhD, and MASc Openings in Autonomous Mining and Humanoid Robot Perception

Waterloo RIPL Lab at the University of Waterloo is recruiting for multiple research openings in robotics , spanning postdoctoral , PhD , and MASc opportunities. Project 1: Autonomous Mining System (2 Postdoc positions) The lab is seeking two postdoctoral researchers for an autonomous mining system project. One role focuses on reinforcement learning for control , and the other focuses on point cloud-based 3D mapping in challenging subterranean environments. The work includes developing novel methods for mining automation, with final deliverables implemented on-site at the project partner’s facilities. Some travel to mining sites will be required. The positions are for 18 months and are expected to start in September 2026 . Desired postdoc profile: PhD or near completion in Engineering or Computer Science; strong publication record in venues such as T-RO, RSS, ICRA, IROS, CVPR, or RA-L; hands-on experience with C++, Python, ROS2, Linux, and Git; strong communication and presentation skills. Mentoring experience is an advantage. Project 2: Humanoid Robot Perception for Emergency Response (1 PhD, 1 MASc) This project develops methods in localization and terrain mapping for bipedal humanoid systems operating in unstructured environments. The PhD opening emphasizes backgrounds in legged robots, computer vision, state estimation, sensor fusion, and deep learning. The MASc opening is aimed at students with a bachelor’s degree or near completion in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields, plus programming experience in C++ or Python and Git. Eligibility notes: The MASc position is only open to Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents. All other positions are open to international candidates. The general open-positions page also notes that MASc degrees at Waterloo come with funding, and that international Master’s funding is not available at this time on that page. How to apply: Email your application to [email protected] with the appropriate subject line. For the postdoc role, use Autonomous Mining Postdoc and indicate whether you want the RL or Mapping position. Attach a CV and a link or PDF to a recent publication or manuscript draft. For PhD/MASc opportunities, send a CV and cover letter describing your research interests, degree status, and whether you are a domestic or international applicant.
