Hairy Hydrodynamics: Mathematical Modelling and Analysis of Fluid Flow Over and Through Fibre Coated Surfaces

This PhD project, 'Hairy Hydrodynamics: Mathematical Modelling and Analysis of Fluid Flow Over and Through Fibre Coated Surfaces', is offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath for entry in September 2026. The research focuses on the theoretical and mathematical modelling of fluid flows interacting with surfaces covered by rigid and flexible fibres—a phenomenon prevalent in both nature and industry but only recently explored in depth within the fluid dynamics community. Inspired by pioneering work from MIT, the project aims to develop and extend mathematical models to address a variety of real-world scenarios, including biological flows (such as those around swimming animals) and industrial processes (like coating technologies). Students will employ a combination of analytical, asymptotic, and numerical methods to investigate fluid-structure interaction problems, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in hydrodynamics and applied mathematics. The project is suitable for candidates with a strong background in mathematics, engineering, or physics, and some familiarity with fluid mechanics and mathematical modelling is advantageous. Funding is available through the University of Bath URSA studentship competition, providing 3.5 years of support including tuition fees, a stipend (£20,780 per annum for 2025/6), and access to a training support budget. The studentship is open to both Home and exceptional International students; however, international applicants should note that costs related to relocation, visa, and UK healthcare surcharge are not covered. Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a First Class or good Upper Second Class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. A master’s degree is beneficial. Non-UK applicants must meet the English language requirements by the application deadline. The University of Bath values diversity and encourages applications from under-represented groups. If you have circumstances affecting your educational attainment, you are invited to include a brief explanation in your personal statement. To apply, submit your application via the University of Bath’s online portal for a PhD in Mathematical Sciences, ensuring you select 'University of Bath URSA' in the funding section and quote the project title and lead supervisor’s name. Early contact with the lead supervisor is recommended, as the position may close before the advertised deadline if a suitable candidate is found.
