PhD Positions in Additive Manufacturing, Circular Economy, and Materials Science at University of Twente

The University of Twente is offering three fully funded PhD positions within the ADD-reAM project, focusing on Additive Manufacturing (AM), circular economy, and sustainable industrial systems. The ADD-reAM project, funded by the Dutch NWO, aims to accelerate the transition towards a circular manufacturing economy by enabling repair and remanufacturing through advanced AM technologies. This interdisciplinary national research programme consists of 15 PhD projects, with three positions available at the University of Twente, each addressing distinct but related topics. The research areas include: (1) Next-generation additive manufacturing for sustainable remanufacturing, exploring how advanced AM technologies can enhance product performance while adhering to circularity principles; (2) Integration of additive manufacturing in circular factory systems, focusing on digital factory modelling, simulation, and the practical implementation of AM-enabled workflows; and (3) Material selection for durable and circular additive manufacturing, developing systematic methodologies for selecting optimal materials based on durability, sustainability, and reusability. Applicants will join a vibrant, international research environment, collaborating with the DPM department and the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing. The positions offer opportunities to work closely with academic and industrial partners, contributing to real-world demonstrators and decision-support tools that facilitate the adoption of circular manufacturing practices. Eligibility requirements include a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Industrial Engineering, Production Systems Manufacturing Technology, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong background in AM processes, manufacturing system integration, digital manufacturing, simulation modelling, factory planning, or cyber-physical production systems. Experience with circular production systems, computational materials databases, or AI-based material modelling is advantageous. Proficiency in programming and modelling tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and excellent English communication skills are required. Proof of English proficiency is necessary for applicants without tertiary education in English. The positions are fully funded for four years, with a gross monthly salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881, plus benefits such as holiday and end-of-year bonuses, pension scheme, generous leave, free sports facilities, and professional development opportunities. The application deadline is February 22, 2026. Interested candidates should apply online, submitting a CV and cover letter, and, if applicable, proof of English proficiency.
