Post-doctoral Researcher in Optical Systems Engineering
CIC nanoGUNE, a leading research center in nanoscience and a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), invites applications for a Post-doctoral Researcher in Optical Systems Engineering. The successful candidate will join the Nanoengineering research group led by Prof. Seifert and work closely with Prospect Biotech, a dynamic spin-off company focused on innovative biophotonics solutions with clinical and industrial applications.
The postdoctoral researcher will take a leadership role in designing, integrating, and developing advanced Raman optical systems, including lasers, spectrographs, optical fibers, and probes. Responsibilities include component selection, system integration and optimization, architecting automated workflows for biological sample processing, configuring spectroscopic measurement systems, and developing data collection and preprocessing pipelines. The role also involves building and validating optical prototypes, optimizing platform performance, and generating technical documentation and scientific manuscripts for regulatory and stakeholder review.
Applicants must have a PhD in Physics, Optical/Photonic Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, with 1–2 years of postdoctoral or industry experience. Essential skills include hands-on experience with optical or analytical systems (microscopy, spectroscopy, laser systems), laboratory automation, instrumentation control, data acquisition, experimental design, data analysis, and programming proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar. Strong English communication skills (minimum B1), technical leadership, and an entrepreneurial mindset are required.
The position offers direct involvement in frontier nanobiophotonics research, access to state-of-the-art equipment, and collaboration with hospitals, manufacturers, and clinical partners. There is a clear growth trajectory into permanent leadership roles within Prospect Biotech, with opportunities for scientific publication and conference participation. The post is based in Donostia/San Sebastián, offering an excellent quality of life and access to European research networks. The contract is for up to 12 months (01/06/2026 - 31/05/2027), with the possibility of permanent incorporation into Prospect Biotech.
CIC nanoGUNE promotes teamwork in a diverse and inclusive environment and encourages applications from all qualified individuals. Eligible candidates may be encouraged to apply for the BikaIntek fellowship, a competitive grant from the Basque Government. The application deadline is 15 April 2026.
