Sustainable Protein-Feed Production From & for Aquaculture

The Resource Recovery Research Group at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has received a major research grant for the PROWAQ project, focusing on sustainable protein-feed production for aquaculture. The project aims to develop local, economically sustainable protein sources to reduce reliance on imported and less sustainable raw materials. It integrates environmental and process engineering, microbiology, and biotechnology to optimize resource recovery and drive innovation in waste-to-protein technologies. The project is coordinated by Associate Professor Pelin Kocatürk Schumacher, with key collaborators including Prof. Sven Kerzenmacher (University of Bremen) and Prof. Svein Jarle Horn (NMBU). Two fully funded PhD/Postdoc positions will be announced soon, offering opportunities to join a multidisciplinary team working on bioelectrochemical systems and circular economy solutions for aquaculture. The positions will be based at NMBU, with collaboration across leading European research groups. Funding is provided by the Research Council of Norway, covering salary and research costs.
