Doctoral Fellow in French Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, and Rhetoric – Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication
Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication, specifically within the French Linguistics section. The successful candidate will conduct original doctoral research leading to a dissertation and may participate in teaching activities. The research focus is on contemporary French-language media and their representations of potential future (geo)political conflicts, with an emphasis on argumentative practices, rhetorical strategies, and enunciative features in discussions of energy-related issues and associated armed conflicts. The project encourages interdisciplinary approaches, particularly those that bridge discourse analysis, enunciative linguistics, rhetoric, French studies, ecocriticism, environmental humanities, sustainability transitions, and critical theory. Candidates are expected to have a Master’s degree in French and Romance Languages and Literatures, French Studies, Linguistics, or a related field, with an excellent academic record and research experience in relevant domains. Proficiency in written and spoken French is essential, and a multilingual profile is advantageous. The fellowship is initially for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation, and offers a salary at 100% of the net AAP member rate, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free under Belgian law. Additional benefits include extensive training opportunities, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The position is based at the Mercator Campus, near Gent-Sint-Pieters Station. Applicants should submit a CV, motivation letter, master dissertation, and contact details for two referees to Dr. Thomas Franck by 15 November 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an oral interview in French and may propose an original research project. For more details on the research initiative, see the provided project link.
