Elastic (non-)linear metamaterial concepts for efficient mitigation of low frequency transient vibrations in high precision systems

This PhD position at KU Leuven, in partnership with Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), offers an exciting opportunity to advance research in elastic (non-)linear metamaterial concepts for the efficient mitigation of low-frequency transient vibrations in high precision systems. The project is part of the Global PhD Partnership between KU Leuven and TU/e, providing a unique international research experience with two years spent at each institution. The research is hosted by the Mecha(tro)nic System Dynamics (LMSD) division at KU Leuven, a large and dynamic group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and co-supervised by the Mechanics of Materials group at TU/e, renowned for their expertise in multi-scale mechanics and advanced materials. The PhD project focuses on the innovative application of elastic metamaterials to achieve transient wave attenuation and low-frequency vibration mitigation, particularly for next-generation high-tech systems in the semiconductor industry. The successful candidate will develop advanced simulation frameworks, integrating wave and finite element methods, multi-scale homogenization, and nonlinear modelling to investigate a wide range of metamaterial concepts. Structural optimization strategies will be devised to tailor metamaterial architectures for targeted dynamic performance. Promising designs will be validated experimentally, first in academic prototypes and then on a lithography scanner stage demonstrator in collaboration with ASML. Supervision is provided by Prof. Elke Deckers (KU Leuven) and Prof. Varvara Kouznetsova (TU/e), with additional support from Dr. Claus Claeys and Dr. Vanessa Cool. The research environment is highly collaborative, with frequent interaction among team members and supervisors, and strong connections to industry. Doctoral training is available through the KU Leuven Arenberg Doctoral School and the Dutch graduate school on Engineering Mechanics, offering both scientific and professional development opportunities. Applicants should hold a master’s degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics, with above-average academic performance. Proficiency in English is required, and experience with structural dynamics, (vibro-)acoustics, and numerical modelling (FEM) is preferred. Knowledge of nonlinear dynamics and optimization is a plus. The position requires mobility, with two years in Belgium and two years in the Netherlands. The remuneration package is competitive with industry standards in Belgium, and includes full funding for four years, salary, and benefits. To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, transcripts, proof of English proficiency, reference letters, and an English version of your MSc thesis or recent publication via the KU Leuven online application tool by February 28, 2026. For further information, contact the supervisors by email. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and provides support for accessibility and individual needs.
