Doctoral Researcher in Soft Robotics

Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in soft robotics, located at the Hervanta Campus in Finland. The position is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET), which is renowned for its world-class research in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, cell biology, biomicrosystems, biomaterials, and biorobotics. The successful candidate will join the Bioinspired Materials and Robotics group, an interdisciplinary team working at the forefront of soft robotics, microfluidics, and intelligent microsystems. This full-time, fixed-term position (3 years) is embedded in a Horizon Europe project focused on developing microfluidic sensor technologies for soft robotics. The role involves designing and modelling microfluidic channel networks, developing computer-aided design tools, and participating in the fabrication and testing of devices. The research combines hands-on design, simulation, fabrication, and experimental work within an international collaborative environment. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in engineering or a related field (biomedical engineering, microtechnology, electrical engineering, physics, mechatronics, etc.) and demonstrate expertise in microfabrication, 3D printing, fluid dynamics, and modelling of microfluidic flow phenomena (including finite element method tools). Programming skills and fluency in English are required. Candidates must be eligible for or accepted into the Doctoral Programme in Medicine, Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering. The position also includes opportunities to supervise undergraduate and graduate students and participate in faculty tasks supporting doctoral studies. The planned starting date is September 1, 2026, or as mutually agreed, but no later than November 1, 2026. The salary is based on the Finnish University Salary System (level 2-4), with a typical starting salary of 2750-2900 EUR/month, increasing with experience and doctoral progress. Benefits include occupational health care, flexible work schedule, access to state-of-the-art research facilities, modern teaching infrastructure, and a personal fund for sports and cultural activities. Tampere University offers a vibrant, multidisciplinary research community, emphasizing openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, and learner-centeredness. The city of Tampere is a major academic hub in Finland, surrounded by nature and offering a rich cultural scene and entrepreneurial environment. To apply, submit your application via the online recruitment system by August 3, 2026. Applications must be written in English and include a CV (TENK guidelines), motivational letter (max 1 page), degree certificates and transcripts, and other relevant documents in PDF format.
