PhD Candidate in Socio-technical Information Infrastructures and Energy Transition (Qualitative Research)
The Department of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim is offering a PhD fellowship focused on Socio-technical Information Infrastructures, with a particular emphasis on qualitative research design. This position is situated at the intersection of social science, business development, and information systems, and is closely tied to Norway’s ambitious energy transition goals, including a 55% reduction in climate gas emissions by 2030 through electrification and digital transformation.
As a PhD candidate, you will join a dynamic research group within the Department of Computer Science and participate in the broader NTNU Energy Transition Initiative, a multidisciplinary environment addressing the challenges and solutions of the twin energy transition. The project will study the interplay between energy transition and digital transformation in Norway, focusing on how digitalization supports both centralized and decentralized energy systems, particularly on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The research will conceptualize energy systems as evolving information infrastructures, encompassing people, processes, technology, and organizational change.
Applicants are invited to develop their project proposals around one or more of the following themes: (1) interoperability in energy transition, emphasizing integration of control and optimization systems and the role of digital tools in collaboration and reporting; (2) emerging digital energy platforms, which facilitate resource interaction and exchange, and create new business roles such as aggregators and balancing service providers; and (3) material participation and infrastructuring, focusing on new energy coordination mechanisms and ICT infrastructure for efficient energy management.
The position offers a competitive gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The employment period is 3 or 4 years, with possible extension for Norwegian language training. NTNU provides a supportive and inclusive working environment, career guidance, mentoring, and access to employee benefits. Diversity and equality are core values, and applications are encouraged from candidates of all backgrounds.
Eligibility requirements include a relevant master’s degree in information systems or equivalent, strong academic performance (average grade B or better), background in socio-technical studies and qualitative research methods, and a research-oriented master thesis. Preferred qualifications include proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (level B2), publication activities, relevant work experience, and willingness to collaborate in cross-disciplinary settings.
Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no, including transcripts, diplomas, CV, master’s thesis, project outline, motivation letter, and contact information for referees. The deadline for applications is 24 January 2026. For questions about the position, contact Adjunct Professor Vidar Hepsø at [email protected].
