PhD in Waste Valorisation with Black Soldier Fly Larvae at Wageningen University & Research

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD position in waste valorisation with larvae of the black soldier fly . The project sits within the Animal Nutrition Group and is led by Prof. Wouter Hendriks , with co-supervision from Dr. Guido Bosch and Dr. Dennis Oonincx . The research focuses on how black soldier fly larvae convert waste streams into valuable biomass, with applications in insect nutrition , animal nutrition , circular economy , and environmental sustainability . The PhD candidate will develop and validate a robust substrate screening methodology, using aqua sludge as an example, and then extend the method to a wider range of waste materials. The work combines larval nutrient requirements, physio-chemical substrate requirements, laboratory work, and animal research facilities. Eligibility highlights include an MSc degree in animal science , biology , entomology , or a related field; strong interest in insect nutrition; ability to work independently; and excellent English communication skills at C1 level . The role also values organisation, collaboration, and the ability to work with stakeholders, technicians, students, and other participants. The position is based at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. Funding is fully covered, with a salary from €3,059 per month in the first year to €3,881 per month in the fourth year, plus a tailored course programme and standard employment benefits. The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the duration of the project if performance is good. The application deadline is 15 July 2026 . Applicants must apply via the WUR vacancy page and submit only a CV and motivation letter, with a maximum total length of 3 pages. Additional documents such as grades and transcripts are not required at this stage.
