About this position

The African STARS Fellowship Programme 2026 is now accepting applications from young African scientists and professionals under 35 who demonstrate leadership potential and a passion for innovation. This prestigious, fully funded fellowship is designed to develop the next generation of African leaders in genomics, diagnostics, vaccine manufacturing, and biotechnology innovation. The programme is a collaboration between the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and the Center for Africa’s Resilience to Epidemics (CARE) at Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Senegal, with support from the Mastercard Foundation.

Fellows can choose between two tracks: the Advanced and Translational Training (ATT) Fellowship, which offers 4 months of intensive technical training in genomics, diagnostics, and vaccine manufacturing, and the Young Professional Programme (YPP) Fellowship, a 12-month programme focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, and industry placements. Both tracks provide mentorship, career development, and placements at top research institutes, biotech hubs, and industry partners across Africa.

Eligibility criteria include being born in or living in Africa, aged 35 or younger, and holding a relevant postgraduate qualification (minimum Master’s degree; PhD is advantageous). The ATT track requires at least 3 years of research, innovation, or industry experience, while the YPP track requires at least 5 years of experience in research management, innovation, or commercialization. Candidates should demonstrate excellence in genomics, diagnostics, biotechnology, or vaccine development, possess strong leadership potential, and be committed to advancing scientific capacity in Africa. Fluency in English or French is required, and women are strongly encouraged to apply.

The fellowship covers all costs, including travel, visa, accommodation, and provides a monthly stipend. Fellows will benefit from mentorship, career development support, and access to the African STARS Alumni Network for ongoing collaboration and professional growth.

To apply, candidates must complete the application form for their chosen track, submit a CV (using the provided template), and provide at least one letter of recommendation from academic or professional referees. The application deadline is 31 January 2026. For more information, visit the programme website or contact [email protected].
