The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa, in partnership with Google DeepMind, is offering a fully funded, one-year, residential Master’s programme in Mathematical Sciences with a special AI for Science stream. This unique opportunity is designed for students passionate about applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced mathematics to real-world scientific challenges. The program combines rigorous coursework in mathematics, AI, and machine learning with a strong research component, preparing students to become leaders in AI-powered scientific innovation.

Applicants must be citizens and residents of any African country (with exceptions for those displaced by war) and should have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with an honours year by August 2025 (or December 2025 for southern African applicants). Eligible backgrounds include mathematics, physics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or related fields with strong computational and mathematical components. Applicants must not have previously held an AIMS scholarship. The application process requires submission of a CV, motivation letter, academic transcripts, examples of mathematical sciences work, and completion of a coding problem. Selection involves an online application and interviews in May 2026.

Forty students will be selected for the 2026 intake, each receiving a full Google DeepMind scholarship covering all program costs. The program aims to nurture Africa’s next generation of scientific leaders in AI and data-driven research. Applications open in December 2025, with a deadline of March 6, 2026.
