About this position

The AITHYRA-CeMM Joint International PhD Call offers 15-20 fully funded positions for outstanding candidates interested in molecular medicine and artificial intelligence. Hosted by AITHYRA, the Research Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, and CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine, both part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, this program is designed for life scientists and computational scientists eager to work at the intersection of cutting-edge biomedical research and AI/ML technologies.

PhD students will join a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary, and international environment, supported by the Medical University of Vienna, the Technical University of Vienna, and the University of Vienna. The program starts in September 2026 and awards a PhD degree from one of the supporting universities. Students benefit from a dynamic research setting, full access to state-of-the-art technologies, and excellent employee benefits including comprehensive insurance, health care services, subsidized lunch, and a vibrant social and cultural life in Vienna.

Research areas span infection, immunity, cancer, network medicine, patient-derived organoids, bioengineering, aging, and the integration of multimodal biological data. AITHYRA emphasizes deep learning, large language models for biological discovery, and graph-based methods for molecular and cellular networks, supported by systems biology, virology, high-throughput genetics, genomics, proteomics, molecular and cell biology, high-content imaging, chemical biology, and organic synthesis. CeMM focuses on post-genomic technologies and societally important diseases, including immune disorders, infections, cancer, metabolic disorders, and aging.

The program is structured around three modes: collect, connect, and contribute, guiding students from data generation and validation to responsible scientific citizenship. Students are empowered to design, execute, manage, and explain research projects in modern AI-integrated molecular medicine. The host institutes operate in a unique mode of super-cooperation, connecting biology with medicine, experiments with computation, and science with society and the arts.

Applicants must be highly motivated, excellent communicators in English, and hold (or expect to hold by September 2026) a degree in medicine, biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, bioengineering, engineering, physics, statistics, mathematics, or a related field (minimum four-year Bachelor’s degree with honours). Research experience, presentation skills, and a commitment to research integrity are essential.

Successful candidates will receive a generous scholarship covering all research costs, university fees, and work-related travel expenses for four years, with a minimum gross monthly salary of EUR 2,779.60 paid 14 times a year. The official language is English, and the institutes host a diverse international community. Vienna offers an outstanding quality of life and a rich cultural environment.

To apply, visit https://apply.cemm.at/ and submit your application before July 31, 2026. For more information, explore the program websites at AITHYRA and CeMM.
