About this position

The Battery Research Scholarship at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) offers an exciting opportunity for PhD candidates to contribute to the development of advanced battery technologies. Supervised by Professor Guoxiu Wang, successful applicants will join the Centre for Clean Energy Technology (CCET) within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Science. CCET is renowned for its research in energy harvesting, storage, and conversion, with a strong focus on innovations in zero-emission energy solutions. The centre adapts its research to the global low-carbon energy context, aiming for breakthroughs that support clean energy transitions.

As part of this project, candidates will work on designing, manufacturing, commercialising, and deploying ultrahigh performance batteries for both domestic and grid-scale energy storage. The research involves collaboration with industry partners to develop new high-capacity battery materials, non-flammable electrolytes, and high-energy batteries with exceptional safety and extended lifespan. The outcomes are expected to deliver leading-edge battery technologies to the renewable energy industry, facilitating the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, stabilising electricity networks, and increasing energy independence in Australia.

Eligibility is open to both international and domestic students, including permanent Australian residents and New Zealand citizens. Applicants must hold a UTS recognised degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or Physics. Acceptable qualifications include an Honours degree with First Class or Second Class Division 1, MSc Research or MSc Coursework with a research thesis of at least 6 months, or an equivalent international degree. Candidates should have relevant research experience and expertise in electrochemistry, batteries, and materials science, and be familiar with energy material synthesis, characterization, and measurement.

International students must meet Australian student visa requirements, including full-time, on-campus enrolment and completion within the standard duration. English language proficiency tests are required for international applicants.

The scholarship provides a generous stipend of $37,000 per year, plus an additional $7,500 for PhD-related expenses over the 3.5-year duration. This fully funded opportunity supports research activities and professional development throughout the PhD program.

To apply, submit your CV and list of publications to Prof. Guoxiu Wang at [email protected]. The application process is open until all positions are filled, and shortlisted candidates will be contacted with further details. For more information on application essentials, visit the UTS Graduate Research applications page. Additional fully funded scholarships, studentships, and awards are available at university, faculty, and department levels to support both domestic and overseas students. Explore the UTS Science Faculty Research Projects and UTS Scholarship search tool for further opportunities.

Join CCET at UTS and contribute to pioneering battery research that empowers the clean energy transition in Australia and beyond.
