About this position

The Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards at Carleton University offer an exceptional opportunity for international PhD students and postdoctoral fellows currently studying or working abroad to join Carleton's vibrant research community. This initiative, administered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), aims to strengthen Canada's research impact in strategic priority areas. The awards are open to both international and Canadian citizens residing abroad, and applicants must be nominated by a Carleton faculty member with an active Tri-Council grant.

Eligible research areas span a wide range of disciplines, including medical science, biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, sociology, political science, economics, computer science, mathematics, environmental science, neuroscience, education, anthropology, and history. The program is designed to support exceptional junior scholars who will contribute to faculty research funded by the Tri-Council agencies. Each faculty member may nominate only one candidate, ensuring a highly competitive selection process.

Applicants must submit a completed nomination form, CV, and transcripts (unofficial accepted) by February 2, 2026. For PhD applicants, a master's degree must be completed before starting the PhD program. Postdoctoral nominees must not begin their appointment before May 1, 2026. The award provides direct financial support to recipients, but does not cover tuition for PhD students. The funding is structured as a pure scholarship, with no requirement for matching funds or tuition coverage.

The selection process will consider research potential, experience, achievements, and alignment with strategic research priorities. Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles will be integrated into the adjudication process. The earliest start date for award activation is May 2026, with the latest for PhDs being January 2027 and for postdocs March 31, 2027. Applicants are encouraged to check the Carleton Impact+ website regularly for updates and further details.

To apply, candidates should download the CIRTA Nomination Form, prepare their CV and transcripts, and submit the application package to [email protected] by the deadline. This is a unique opportunity to advance your research career at Carleton University, supported by Canada's leading federal research agencies.
