Constrained Bismuth – (Precious) Metal-free Scaffolds for Ammonia Activation (PhD Scholarship) Maynooth University in Ireland

The Department of Chemistry at Maynooth University invites applications for a fully funded PhD Scholarship as part of the Frontiers for the Future Award, supported by Research Ireland. The project, titled 'Constrained Bismuth – (Precious) Metal-free Scaffolds for Ammonia Activation,' aims to develop innovative concepts in organic ligand design and d- and p-block chemistry, focusing on the creation of new catalysts for activating small molecules such as ammonia.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Daniela Bezuidenhout, engaging in the synthesis and purification of organic ligands and organo-main group compounds. The role involves comprehensive characterization of synthesized compounds using NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The student will be responsible for data collection and reporting, with appropriate training and supervision, and will conduct reactivity and catalytic studies of the compounds.

Additional responsibilities include general laboratory maintenance, administrative tasks, assisting in the practical supervision of Bachelor students, ensuring data validity and reliability, and maintaining accurate records. The student will present research findings at group meetings, departmental seminars, and national/international conferences, and prepare draft publications for peer-reviewed journals. Training and development opportunities are provided, and compliance with university policies, including occupational health and safety, is required. Effective time management and the ability to work independently and as part of a research team are essential.

The scholarship covers a student stipend of €25,000 per annum, annual tuition fees, and additional expenses for equipment, conference registration, training, and travel. The award is for four years of full-time study, subject to satisfactory annual academic progression. Awardees must be resident in Ireland and available to pursue their research at Maynooth University for the full duration.
