About this position

The CSIRO Data61 PhD Scholarship program offers outstanding postgraduate students the opportunity to advance their research careers in one of Australia's leading data and digital science environments. Data61, part of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is dedicated to developing top-quality doctoral students who will contribute to Australia's data-skilled workforce. The program provides a diverse, inclusive, and flexible working environment, supporting students to develop innovative digital and data solutions with real-world impact.

PhD scholars benefit from access to a world-class research setting, tailored coaching, and development programs, as well as close collaboration with both Data61 researchers and academic supervisors from Australian universities. Research projects are aligned with Data61's strategic goals, ensuring relevance and high impact in the fields of data science, digital science, and related areas. The scholarship is awarded in partnership with Australian universities, providing dual support from university and Data61 supervisors.

Eligibility is open to both domestic and international students, including those currently residing overseas who hold a valid Australian student visa. Applicants must possess a first-class honours (H1) Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant research area, have applied for or recently commenced a PhD program at an Australian university, and have a university supervisor willing to oversee their research. Candidates must not already hold a PhD and should be prepared to start within the specified commencement period.

The scholarship provides generous funding, including a full stipend of $42,000 per annum for the first two years, increasing to $44,000 from the third year, for up to 3.5 years. Students who already receive a university base stipend may apply for a top-up scholarship valued at $10,000 per annum. Additional support includes up to $5,000 for learning and development expenses. Continued funding is contingent on satisfactory academic progress and engagement with Data61, monitored through annual reviews.

Applications are accepted exclusively through the CSIRO Studentships and Scholarships online portal. Prospective applicants are encouraged to check the CSIRO website for open opportunities, create a personal profile, and submit their application online. Email applications are not accepted. For further details, applicants should consult the FAQs and contact Data61 only if their query is not addressed in the provided information.

This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for motivated students aiming to build a dynamic and impactful research career in data and digital science, with the support of Australia's premier research organisation and leading university partners.
