About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in Edge Intelligence for 6G Networks, based in the Department of Electronics and ICT Engineering Technology within the Faculty of Applied Engineering. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to pioneering research at a dynamic, international university renowned for its innovative academic environment and commitment to scientific excellence.

The PhD project will focus on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into distributed cloud-edge infrastructures, aiming to enable autonomous and efficient management of next-generation (6G) communication systems. Research topics include distributed and federated learning across the edge-cloud continuum, AI-driven network management and orchestration, collaborative intelligence, and real-time analytics for ultra-low-latency applications. The candidate will contribute to the realization of intelligent, self-optimizing 6G ecosystems and publish scientific articles related to the project.

As a doctoral researcher, you will also undertake limited teaching and research support tasks within the department. The position is based at City Campus (The Beacon) and Campus Groenenborger, offering a stimulating and supportive working environment. You will have access to a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field by the start date. Excellent academic results (at least cum laude/with distinction) are required. Candidates should demonstrate teaching competences and research qualities aligned with university standards, a strong interest in communication networks, distributed systems, or cloud/edge computing, and basic programming skills (Python, C/C++, or similar). Good analytical and problem-solving abilities and proficiency in English (written and spoken) are essential. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of 5G or beyond-5G network architectures, familiarity with virtualization, SDN/NFV, containerization, orchestration platforms, experience with AI/ML for networking or automation, and experience with experimental platforms or research projects.

Funding: The doctoral scholarship is offered for one year, renewable for up to three additional years following positive annual evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to university rates. Additional benefits include eco vouchers, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.

Application Window: The planned start date is July 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications must be submitted online by April 23, 2026 (midnight Brussels time). Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV with transcript, two reference letters, English proficiency certificate, and a short research proposal (max. 4 pages) aligned with Edge Intelligence for 6G Networks and IDLab research on flexible and deterministic networking. The proposal should cover problem statement, motivation, expected novelty/impact, approach, evaluation plan, and alignment with IDLab research areas.

Supervision: The project will be supervised by Principal Investigators Nina Slamnik-Kriještorac and Dr. Miguel Camelo, and Full Professor Johann Marquez-Barja. For job-related questions, contact the supervisors via their university emails. For application form queries, contact [email protected].

The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The institution holds the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and offers a family-friendly, growth-oriented environment.
