The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in the field of computer vision and modelling for biomedical applications. This position is based in the Department of Electromechanical Engineering within the Faculty of Applied Engineering, offering a dynamic and stimulating research environment at Campus Groenenborger.
The research project centers on developing finite element models and AI-driven solutions to improve perforator mapping through dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT) in breast reconstruction surgeries. The integration of advanced infrared imaging and artificial intelligence techniques aims to enhance the detection and evaluation of perforators—critical blood vessels used in Deep Inferior Epigastric artery Perforator (DIEP) flap surgeries. By improving the precision of perforator selection, the project seeks to minimize risks of tissue necrosis and optimize surgical outcomes for patients.
As a doctoral researcher, you will contribute to the development of machine learning algorithms that analyze thermal data and predict vascular performance, significantly advancing the automation of medical imaging processes. You will also publish scientific articles related to the research, support teaching and research tasks within the department, assist in industry imaging projects, and help supervise Master’s students. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science, or obtain it by the start date. Required skills include knowledge in finite element modelling or machine learning for vision, and hands-on experience with image acquisition and camera technologies (visible, infrared) is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate excellent academic results, strong written and spoken English communication skills, and qualities such as integrity, creativity, and cooperation. Dutch language proficiency is not required.
The scholarship is offered for two years, with the possibility of renewal for another two years following a positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to university rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs, and access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.
