About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in Operations Research for warehouse optimisation, based in the Department of Engineering Management within the Faculty of Business and Economics. This position offers the opportunity to conduct pioneering research focused on developing algorithms for proactive decision support in non-stationary warehouse environments, addressing efficiency across interdependent processes such as storage location assignment, order picking, and packing. The project is highly relevant to the dynamic context of modern e-commerce.

As a doctoral researcher, you will prepare and defend a PhD thesis, collaborate closely with your supervisor, and participate in academic activities including presenting at scientific conferences and publishing in the scientific press. You will also contribute to existing research projects and may compete for internal or external predoctoral funding, such as the FWO PhD Fellowship Fundamental Research. Limited teaching and research support tasks, such as supervising master theses, are part of the role.

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a master's degree in business engineering, operations research, computer science, civil engineering, or a related field. Strong modelling and programming skills (ideally in C++, Julia, or Python) and proficiency in English are required. The university values candidates with excellent study results and encourages those with interest or experience in quantitative methods to apply. The working environment is dynamic, inclusive, and supportive of professional development, with access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.

The scholarship is initially for one year and can be extended up to four years after positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. The planned start date is 15 September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

To apply, submit your application via the University of Antwerp’s online platform by 9 July 2026, including a motivation letter, academic CV, and a one-page description of a work package you would like to pursue within the project. Selection interviews will be held on 15 July 2026. For questions about the job, contact Prof. dr. Christof Defryn at [email protected]. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, equal opportunities, and a family-friendly, sustainable work environment.
