About this position

The PhD project centers on Zero-touch Network and Service Management (ZSM) as a key enabler for autonomous and resilient 6G networks. The research aims to investigate how network intelligence, automation, distributed core network designs, and AI-driven control loops can enhance network robustness, service continuity, and fault tolerance across heterogeneous and multi-domain environments. The candidate will explore innovative mechanisms for autonomous failure mitigation and dynamic adaptation to changing conditions, ensuring reliable service delivery across cloud, edge, terrestrial, and non-terrestrial infrastructures.

As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles, and support teaching and research activities within the department. The position offers access to a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School, and you will work at City Campus (The Beacon) and Campus Groenenborger in a stimulating environment.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field by the start date, with excellent study results (at least cum laude/with distinction). Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is required. Candidates should demonstrate teaching and research competences in line with university standards, a strong interest in communication networks, distributed systems, or cloud/edge computing, and basic programming skills (Python, C/C++, or similar). Preferred qualifications include knowledge of 5G or beyond-5G network architectures, virtualization, SDN/NFV, containerization, orchestration platforms, and experience with AI/ML for networking or automation.

The scholarship is offered for one year, renewable up to three additional years following positive annual evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to university rates and includes eco vouchers, internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs. The planned start date is July 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
