The University of Sussex Business School, in partnership with the ESRC Centre for Digital Futures at Work (Digit), is offering a fully funded PhD studentship for 2026. This opportunity is designed for candidates interested in exploring the intersection of digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), and public service transformation within UK local government. The studentship is part of the South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDA) and is based in the Management programme, providing a rich interdisciplinary environment for research and professional development.

The research theme focuses on how digital and AI technologies are reshaping work organisation, skills requirements, service delivery, and career trajectories in the local government sector. Key areas of investigation may include identifying skills needs and gaps across digital teams and frontline services such as housing, planning, and social care; examining the use of digital and AI tools to support preventative, person-centred services that empower residents and enable earlier intervention; and analysing service areas undergoing major transformation, where technical and interpersonal skills are closely intertwined. The project scope is flexible, allowing the successful candidate to tailor their research to their interests and the needs of participating local authorities.

Supervision will be provided by Professor Ödül Bozkurt, Dr Becky Faith, and Dr Rachel Verdin, who bring expertise in management, digital transformation, and the sociology of work. The studentship offers comprehensive funding, including full UK or International tuition fees and a UKRI-level stipend of £21,383 per annum for the 2026/27 academic year, renewable for up to four years (full-time or part-time).
