About this position
The School of Sport and Health Sciences at Cardiff Metropolitan University invites applications for a fully funded Welsh Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) (ESRC DTP) studentship in the Sport and Exercise Science Pathway, commencing October 2026. This innovative project, in partnership with the Women’s Super League, aims to develop the first evidence-informed perinatal health system tailored for professional women’s footballers, addressing the unique challenges faced by players during pregnancy and their postpartum return to play.
Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research will combine lived experience, stakeholder consensus, health surveillance, and co-design methodologies to generate actionable recommendations. These outcomes are intended to inform Women’s Super League policies and clinical practices, ultimately supporting and optimizing return-to-play protocols and enhancing maternal health and wellbeing in professional football.
The studentship is open to both home and international students, with up to 30% of the cohort available to international applicants. Notably, international students will not be charged the fee difference between UK and international rates. The ESRC funding covers full tuition fees, an annual tax-free stipend (currently £20,780 for 2025-26 full-time), and access to a Research Training Support Grant. Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) may also be available for eligible students.
Applicants should hold (or expect to hold) a UK first or upper second-class honours degree, or a master’s degree, or have equivalent experience. Non-traditional academic backgrounds are welcomed. All WGSSS funded students are required to complete a funded Research in Practice placement of three months (or part-time equivalent), with opportunities in academia, policy, business, or civil society organizations.
Applications must be submitted by April 23, 2026, via the Cardiff Metropolitan University Research Degree Scholarships portal. Required documents include the WGSSS Studentship Application Form, academic CV (max two pages), two academic or professional references, degree certificates and transcripts (with translations if applicable), and proof of English language competency if relevant. Short-listed candidates will be invited to interview, which includes a presentation and panel questions.
The WGSSS and Cardiff Metropolitan University are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, welcoming applications from all backgrounds. For further details and to apply, visit the official scholarship page or contact the research degrees office at [email protected].
