Fully Funded OIST Research Internship in STEM Fields (Fall 2026, Japan) Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in Japan

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Japan is offering a fully funded Research Internship Program for Fall 2026, open to international students in a wide range of STEM fields. The program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates (bachelor’s or master’s), who are interested in gaining hands-on research experience in areas such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Mathematics, Computational Science, Environmental Science, Ecological and Marine Sciences, Engineering, and Medical Science. The internship duration ranges from 3 to 6 months, with the Fall 2026 intake running from October 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027.

Interns will benefit from a comprehensive funding package, including a daily allowance of 2,400 JPY, a community allowance (OIST shuttle bus pass), one direct round-trip air ticket, furnished accommodation (on- or off-campus), and full administrative support for visa and other needs. The program is open to students of any nationality, and there is no requirement for IELTS or TOEFL scores. Applicants must be in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree, enrolled in a master’s program, or have recently graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. PhD students are not eligible. The academic background of applicants should align with their chosen research unit at OIST, and currently enrolled students must have approval from their home institution.

Research opportunities span a diverse array of units and projects, including but not limited to: analysis of partial differential equations, evolutionary genomics, marine physics and engineering, computational neuroscience, quantum systems, applied cryptography, information theory, and more. Interns will be assigned to research units based on mutual interests and availability, with projects co-designed in discussion with OIST faculty after acceptance.
