About this position

The University of Galway, located in the vibrant city of Galway, Ireland, is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Control and Robotics within the School of Engineering, College of Science and Engineering. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about advancing the intelligence, autonomy, and adaptability of robotic systems through rigorous research and practical experimentation.

The PhD project centers on the development of advanced control and decision-making algorithms for robotics and autonomous systems. Key research areas include nonlinear control for complex robotic systems, distributed optimization and coordination in multi-agent systems, game-theoretic modeling of cooperative and competitive robotic behaviors, data-driven and learning-based control methods, and embodied intelligence where perception, control, and physical interaction are tightly coupled. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of theory and implementation, developing mathematical foundations and validating methods on robotic platforms such as UAVs and ground vehicles.

As a PhD student, you will benefit from a dynamic research environment that bridges academia and industry, access to state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, mentorship from leading experts in control and robotics, and opportunities for international research exchanges at top institutions in Europe, North America, and China. Collaborations may include KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), the University of Waterloo (Canada), and Peking University (China).

The scholarship provides a tax-exempt living allowance of €25,000 per annum and covers university fees (€5,890 EU rate including levy). The start date is 1st September 2026. Applicants must have a 1st class or 2.1 honours Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in control, mathematics, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline. A strong background in control theory, robotics/artificial intelligence, or related fields is required. Preference will be given to candidates with robust mathematical skills, hands-on robotics experience, and familiarity with the Robot Operating System (ROS). Excellent communication skills, motivation for research, self-learning abilities, teamwork, and problem-solving skills are essential.

To apply, submit a covering letter, CV, transcript, statement of personal research interests, and contact details of two referees via email to [email protected] with the subject 'PhD application 2026 - your name'. The application deadline is 15 June 2026 at 17:00, but the position may close earlier if filled. For more information about moving to Ireland, visit Euraxess Ireland.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact theoretical and experimental research in robotics, supported by a leading institution and a collaborative international network.
