About this position
The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh is offering the Career Development Scholarship, a fully funded PhD opportunity for talented students from a Black heritage background, including those of mixed Black heritage. This initiative aims to foster diversity and excellence in the fields of Astrophysics, Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, and Condensed Matter Physics. The scholarship is open to both UK and international applicants. It covers full tuition fees (for UK or international students), provides a 42-month tax-free stipend for living expenses, and includes a £4,200 research allowance for travel and project costs.
Up to two full scholarships are awarded each year. Eligible candidates must apply to a PhD programme in one of the specified fields within the School of Physics and Astronomy. Applicants should select up to four supervisors or projects that align with their interests, submit their PhD application through the University of Edinburgh Application Portal, and then complete and email the Career Development Scholarship Form along with a one-page CV to the graduate school.
The application deadline is 24th November 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for online interviews in mid-December, with offers released before the end of 2025. Selected candidates will also be nominated for the Institute of Physics Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship, ensuring PhD funding regardless of the outcome. Even if not selected for this scholarship, applicants will be considered for other PhD funding opportunities within the School.
This opportunity is ideal for students passionate about physics and committed to advancing diversity in STEM.
