Fully Funded PhD Studentship: Artificial Intelligence for Paediatric Healthcare – Digitising Healthcare Records using NLP Swansea University in United Kingdom

This fully funded PhD studentship at Swansea University offers an exciting opportunity to advance paediatric healthcare through artificial intelligence and natural language processing. The project addresses the critical challenge of unstructured, handwritten paediatric health records in Wales, aiming to digitise and structure these records using cutting-edge NLP and machine learning techniques. By creating AI-ready datasets, the research will enable early detection of conditions, support personalised treatment planning, and help bridge the gap between paediatric and adult healthcare standards.

The research will employ a human-in-the-loop approach, integrating clinical expertise into model development to enhance accuracy and trustworthiness. Ethical considerations, including data privacy and collaboration with hospital ethics boards, are central to the project, ensuring responsible and impactful outcomes. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment, working closely with supervisors Dr. T. T. Doan and Dr. D. R. Sahoo, and will have access to interdisciplinary resources and support.

Funding includes full tuition fees for four years, an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025-26), and up to £1,000 per year for research expenses. International students may be eligible for the Swansea University International Postgraduate Research Excellence Scholarship (SUIPRES), which covers the difference between international and home tuition fees. Applicants should hold a 2.1 undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline, or a relevant master’s degree with a minimum overall grade at ‘Merit’ (or non-UK equivalent). English language proficiency is required (IELTS 6.5 overall, no component below 6.0, or Swansea University recognised equivalent). Some applicants may need ATAS clearance, but this is not required for the scholarship application process.
