About this position

Ghent University is offering its prestigious Special Research Fund (BOF) Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South, providing an exceptional opportunity for early-stage researchers to pursue a PhD through a unique 'sandwich' model. This program is designed for talented students from developing countries, enabling them to conduct high-impact research by alternating periods of study at Ghent University in Belgium and their home university. The initiative aims to foster international partnerships, strengthen local research capacity, and address global challenges in fields such as environmental science, public health, climate, food systems, and more.

The scholarship covers a monthly stipend of approximately €2,400 for 24 months at Ghent University, a substantial installation allowance, and a travel budget for flights between Belgium and the home country. Tuition fees are waived, and the Ghent University promoter receives additional funding to support research activities. Co-funding for the 24 months spent at the home institution is mandatory, and applicants must secure a written statement from their partner university confirming local funding and research time allocation. The program is open to all research fields, with preference for topics relevant to the North-South context, such as sustainable development and public health.

Applicants must be nationals of eligible Global South countries, at the beginning of their PhD, and have at least 36 months of doctoral research remaining as of October 1, 2026. Proposals must be jointly submitted by the candidate, a Ghent University supervisor, and a supervisor at the partner university. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply, and each Ghent supervisor may support up to two candidates of different genders. The application deadline is February 17, 2026, and all materials must be submitted electronically. For more information, visit the Ghent University funding page or contact [email protected].
