Eligible fields include Critical Care, Epidemiology, Public Health, Surgical Sciences, Biomedical Research, Clinical Education, Neuroscience, Reproductive Sciences, and more. This flexibility allows working healthcare professionals to enhance their qualifications without leaving their current roles or to pursue an immersive one-year research experience in Edinburgh.

Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, the equivalent of a UK first-class honours degree and must have already secured an offer of admission for an eligible programme. Selection is highly competitive and based on academic merit and the strength of a personal statement outlining career goals and community impact. Priority is given to those who have not previously studied at the master's level and to those with an unconditional offer at the time of application. Applicants must be domiciled in one of the eligible developing countries as defined by the University, primarily based on the DAC List of ODA Recipients.
