Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship Program

Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship Program 2027 in Japan is a fully funded postdoctoral research fellowship for international researchers.

The fellowship is offered by the Matsumae International Foundation and supports short-term research stays in Japan while promoting academic collaboration and global understanding. Preferred research fields include natural science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture, making this a strong opportunity for researchers in a wide range of STEM and life-science areas.

Funding: monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 for living and research expenses, an arrival fund of JPY 120,000, round-trip economy airfare, overseas travel insurance, and a study tour to Hiroshima.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must be non-Japanese nationals, hold a Ph.D. at the time of application, be 45 years old or younger, have a full-time job in their home country and plan to return there after the fellowship, have no past/current long-term stay in Japan, obtain acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying, and have sufficient English or Japanese ability.

Application window: June 1 to June 30, 2026 (Japan Standard Time). Applications are submitted by email to the foundation using the prescribed forms and supporting documents. The host professor’s acceptance letter is required before submission.

Required documents include the application form, reason for application, research plan, CV and publication list, recommendation letter from the home institution, Ph.D. certificate, and letter of acceptance from the host professor in Japan.
