About this position

The Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) in L'Aquila, Italy, announces the new call for applications for the forty-second cycle of its PhD programs for the academic year 2026/27. GSSI is offering 38 scholarships for doctoral studies across four main academic programmes: Astroparticle Physics, Computer Science, Regional Science & Economic Geography, and Mathematics in Natural, Social and Life Sciences. The academic year will officially begin on November 1, 2026.

Scholarships are distributed as follows: 13 for Astroparticle Physics, 15 for Computer Science, and 10 for Regional Science and Economic Geography. The Mathematics program has already opened 10 positions for November 2025, with further positions to be announced. Each scholarship includes a gross annual stipend of €16,243, accommodation in GSSI facilities or a substitute grant, board, and additional benefits. Founded in 2012 as a Center for Advanced Studies of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), GSSI became a School of Advanced Studies in 2016, offering post-graduate education and research opportunities. The institute is committed to interdisciplinary research, removing barriers between fields, and promoting scientific dissemination and cultural events. GSSI has awarded over 230 PhD degrees and maintains collaborations with prestigious scientific institutions across Europe and worldwide.

Deadlines vary by program: May 4, 2026, for Regional Science and Economic Geography and the FIS project in Computer Science; May 15, 2026, for Mathematics; May 28, 2026, for Astroparticle Physics; and June 5, 2026, for Computer Science. Candidates should have a master's degree or equivalent in relevant fields and demonstrate strong academic credentials. International applicants are encouraged to apply, and proficiency in English is expected.
