About this position
This PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia is offered under the prestigious Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) 2026. The research project focuses on the synergistic acoustic-electrostatic-inertial separation of microplastics from blood, aiming to address significant health risks such as cerebral thrombosis, endothelial dysfunction, accelerated cardiovascular disease progression, and systemic inflammation caused by microplastics in the bloodstream.
Current separation methods rely on bulk filtering, which is inefficient for clinical use. This project builds on recent advances using surface acoustic waves (SAW) to generate acoustic radiation forces capable of isolating microplastics from blood flow. The research will explore innovative strategies, including the use of SAW, functionalised surfaces leveraging the electromechanical properties of microplastics, and hydrodynamic forces based on size and mass differences. The ultimate goal is to develop clinically applicable devices for microplastic separation from blood.
The project is part of Monash University Malaysia’s Graduate Research Thematic Cluster, Integrated Strategies in Microplastics Research, and offers a multidisciplinary environment. Candidates with backgrounds in mechanical engineering or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Experience in SAW and interdigital transducers, 3D printing, microfluidics, and acoustics is highly valued. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential for collaboration with researchers from diverse backgrounds.
The GEMS scholarship provides full funding, including an immersive year at Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, and access to Monash’s global research network and infrastructure. To be eligible, applicants must hold a First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent qualification recognised by Monash University Malaysia and meet English language requirements.
Interested candidates should first contact the main supervisor, Dr Ajay Achath Mohanan, to discuss their academic background and suitability for the project. If a good fit is determined, applicants should submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) with a research proposal relevant to the GEMS project. Eligible candidates will be invited to apply for PhD candidature and may be selected for an interview, expected in March 2026. The application deadline is April 30, 2026.
