About this position

This fully funded PhD position at Sheffield Hallam University offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of agentic AI, smart energy systems, and next-generation battery technologies. The project, based in the College of Business, Technology and Engineering, is part of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) scheme, combining research with up to 180 hours per year of teaching or research support activities. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team with strong industry and academic links, contributing to innovations that support the global transition to flexible, low-carbon energy systems.

The research focuses on developing algorithms and models for agentic reconfigurable battery systems (RBS) that autonomously adapt their behaviour in real time. By integrating advanced AI frameworks—such as multi-agent reinforcement learning, autonomous optimisation agents, and large model-based reasoning systems—with detailed models of reconfigurable battery hardware, the project aims to enable batteries to participate intelligently in electricity, heat, transport, and hydrogen markets. Key research activities include designing strategies for market participation (e.g., frequency response, peak-shaving, EV charging optimisation, heat-pump support, hydrogen production), building simulation environments or digital twins, and evaluating performance under realistic operational and market conditions.

Applicants should have a strong background in electrical engineering or related disciplines, with excellent analytical and programming skills. Experience in AI, optimisation, and power systems is essential. The position is open to both UK and international applicants, with a strong encouragement for candidates from underrepresented groups in postgraduate research. English language proficiency (IELTS 7, minimum 6.5 in all areas, or equivalent) is required for non-native speakers, with qualifications taken within the last two years.

The GTA scholarship covers tuition fees (UK and international) and provides a maintenance bursary (£22,152 for 2025/26) for 3.5 years. The application deadline is 7 May 2026.
